Why is BFP running so slowly?
I am having trouble with the BFP running very slowly especially in Listen and Do. The response times are so slow it takes more than half an hour for a 15 minute session and if I click too soon for the program it registers an error even if it is the correct response. I am running on a new iMac quad core machine with 8 gigs of memory so I do not think it is my machine. Do you know what the problem is or what I can do about it?

Please reinstall BFP if you think there is an issue with the installation itself. Otherwise, I'd recommend checking out our Mac Maintenance Guide.

Hi James - Usually this is due to other applications or security software running in the background. I'd recommend calling our technical support team to troubleshoot over the phone.

James - I was also having this problem (hence '2 people have this problem'). The program would rapidly slow down and, by the time I got to 'Tell Us Apart', I was waiting at least 20 seconds for each individual 'dah' and 'gah'. I am a software developer but I knew that my pc was not running optimally. I suspected a Trojan.
I bit the bullet, backed up any required data files, reformatted my drive and reinstalled Windows (XP), then an up-to-date virus checker.
BFP is now working beautifully. The clock ticks over every second (which mine wasn't and I suspect yours is not) and the sessions are fast. The sessions did not pick up from where I left off, although I suspect I could have saved the data from my previous 4 sessions, but I was happy to restart and performance was so much better that I knocked over the first 2 sessions before I knew it.
I'm not suggesting that you reinstall your operating system, and I note you are running on a Mac, but knowing that in my case it was my pc software at fault, I would consider, at least, reinstalling BFP (there is a comment from another user here that this worked for them) and ensuring that you know what programs are running in the background (you will have several). Programs such as Anti-Virus software should be configured to ignore BFP and any specialised desktop managers turned off (I had an nVidia desktop which was not really needed). The disks should be defragged, and make sure that they are not 99% full (you need some spare disk capacity so that BFP can swap optimally between RAM and disk).
I have read a couple of comments from people who have performance problems that continue even when they install on another computer. I would make sure that the 2 machines were not networked and that they were not possibly susceptible to the same viruses or trojans (e.g. 2 pcs in the same home).-
Hi Greg - Thanks so much for taking the time to post this solution. We really appreciate your effort.

I'm new; I've only run BFP for the first five sessions or so. But I'll comment anyway. :)
I too am running on a newer Mac, though not as shiny and powerful as the one described above , and I'm also seeing a good deal of sluggishness on some of the exercises (mostly on Tell Us Apart, though I've seen some in Listen And Do as well)... not as bad as Mr. Beringer's situation, above, but enough to slow me down at times. The Mac's Activity Monitor shows nothing running in the background except the standard kernel activities - as much of a clean slate as the processor will provide.
It's not a terror or anything. I'm still enjoying BFP. But I am curious whether the speed issue is showing up among other users, or Mac users in particular, but just hasn't been serious enough for most to complain. :)-
I have found that in my case I was able to solve the problem by setting my anti virus software to ignore BFP. I seems the anti-viral software running in the background was interfering with BFP.

Yes, me too. Nothing in background (other than normal OSX) on a 2.4 GHz C2D with 4 GB of ram.

I also experience sluggish response on my new shiny new iMac at 3Ghz and 4GB memory.

I have not installed any security program. So, if one is running then it is part of the default iMac installation for Mac OS X 10.6.2. Please let me know if there is a need to add an exception somewhere. Thanks!

Hi Kevin - I checked in with tech support and they suggested that 1) you confirm you are rebooting your computer daily and 2) this maintenance guide.

Hi Harry - You can reinstall BFP if you think there is an issue with the installation itself. Otherwise, I'd recommend checking out our Mac Maintenance Guide.

I've had the same experience, also with a MAC with plenty of memory.

As I progress to higher levels the program gets slower by 3 to 5 seconds. When I click the response button it takes 3 to 5 seconds for the "bell" to sound and then another few seconds for the score numbers to flip. Sometimes the stop for 3 to 5 seconds also. This is becoming a real problem and making it NOT FUN to do. It must also add to the incorrect timing on the data I do??

Hello, after using BFP for 20 mins it starts to run slowly and makes it really difficult to hear the sounds and get the mouse clicks correct. When I first start it seems to be running well but then seems to slow down and become very clunky. I am using a Macbook air with 2 gig of RAM. Please help or it will be imposible to use. Also when I have finsihed and ask it to look for software updates it comes back with an error, please try again later. But it does this every time. Thanks.

Just followed your instructions on Mac Maintenance Guide and now my mac won't boot and I have to do a full re-install. Horrendous. I think I would like a full refund as the software has done nothing but cause me and others problems!

"Solutions" such as checking to see if a "security program is running," rebooting your Mac, or reinstalling BFP waste the customer's time. The issue is that BFP was written for the old PowerPC platform, and runs like a slug under Rosetta on Intel Macs with plenty of resources. It's unusable for me. Customers deserve a modern program that works.

To Jeff, Paul and others with Macs. I wrote a lengthy post at the top of this thread about how I fixed my Windows installation which had similar timing issues. There now seem to be just too many mac users with these timing issues for my windows-specific recommendations to be useful to you. Macs and PCs are entirely different beasts and I would hate to think that I am encouraging Mac users to go through the extreme changes I had to make to my Windows OS. If you are experiencing this timing issue on Windows though then it definitely can be fixed with some effort (see my post towards the top).
