Vestibular dysfunction
I am a 69 year old male with hearing and vestibular dysfunction problems caused by having a flu shot while I already had an inner ear problem. I have now received a cochlear implant and the hearing is getting better each month but the balance problems still persist and perhaps are even worse since the implant. Is there anything I can do to improve the balance situation.

Inappropriate?Have you tried Wii Fit?
In response to a thread now in the archives, I bought one over a year ago. I have used it ever since for the balance exercises. What I like is that some of the exercises show you visually where your center of balance is located.
Since I don't have specific vestibular problems, I did a search on "Wii Fit vestibular rehab" and came up with this enthusiastic recommendation.1 Comment

Thanks Alan....my wife and I got a Wii for Christmas and it sure was the life of the party with our family. I have tried some of the balance stuff and I think you are right....It will sure let me know where my center of gravity is. My wife and I like the bowling and ski jumping as well. There are lots of other games that we have not got around to playing because the grandchild and the parents were hogging the controllers. Jimbo -
Inappropriate?Hi Jimbo, if you found out about PositScience after reading 'The brain that changes itself' you already know this but if not, read on.
Research by one of the scientists discussed in that book (Paul Bach-y-Rita) led to the development of a device which is being tested in people with vestibular dysfunctions. The idea is that they use sensory neurons on the tongue to help the brain to regulate balance. Inappropriate?No problem Jimbo. I'm from Europe and I just realised that the U.K. wicab website has a lot more information because it appears that the product can be used in the European Union but is not yet approved for use in the U.S. by the FDA. I haven't looked into this to a great extent though so you'll have to double check this yourself if you're interested.

Also the U.K. site says that the device is available currently in the European Union, so if this is something you really want to try and if they don't accept you into the U.S. trial, going to the U.K. might be another option that you could investigate.
