Inappropriate?
Hi Avril,
Are you asking about the difference in symptoms between physical hearing impairment vs. Auditory Processing Disorders?
...Or the difference between APD vs. cognitive decline or brain injury?
A hearing impairment is the loss of the ability to detect frequencies or low-amplitude sounds that humans are naturally able to detect.
Conversely, Auditory Processing Disorders (APD) affect the way the brain processes auditory information. It is not a sensory (inner ear) hearing impairment; individuals with APD usually have normal peripheral hearing ability, yet they might have trouble paying attention to and remembering information presented orally -or when information is simultaneously presented in multiple modalities. They may need people to speak slowly, or need more time to process information. Simple repetition or increasing the volume may not help if a person with APD is not processing.
General brain problems can encompass areas of cognition that don't rely on auditory input.
Sorry you're frustrated... I hope that helps.
